Itchy Scalp Treatments
- Dandruff shampoos do not just get rid of dandruff. They also contain ingredients that soothe scalp itch. One of those ingredients is zinc pyrithione. Look for this ingredient listed on the shampoo bottle. Zinc pyrithione kills fungus or bacteria that may be causing the itch. Derived from the natural element zinc, it is used to treat other skin conditions as well. Apply a dandruff shampoo with zinc pyrithione to your scalp every time you shampoo. Let the lather sit on your scalp for five minutes, then wash it out.
- You can make your own treatment for your itchy scalp at home. Lavender oil is an excellent natural choice because it works to treat several causes of an itchy scalp---even head lice. Place 1/4 cup of oatmeal in one cup of water and let it steep for 20 minutes, then strain it and collect the liquid in a bowl. Add five drops of lavender oil and five drops of rosemary oil. Mix together and pour onto your scalp. Massage it in and let it remain on your scalp for 10 minutes, then rinse. You can do this as often as needed to relieve the itch.
- Aloe vera is a plant that is well known for its ability to heal your body both inside and out. You can buy it in gel form or as a juice, or you can split open a fresh frond of aloe and get right to the gel inside. To heal your itchy scalp, rub aloe vera gel or juice into your scalp. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse it out. Repeat this at least twice a week until you feel results. You may want to continue this treatment once a week to keep the itch from returning.
