How Can I Make My Refrigerator Smell Good?
- 1). Look at the expiration dates on all food. Remove anything that is old and outdated. Check all food that doesn't have expiration dates, too. Look for signs that the food is outdated, such as mold, texture inconsistencies due to food becoming hard and stale and foul odors.
- 2). Pour an even mixture of white vinegar and water into a glass or container. Dip a rag into the mixture. Wring out the rag. Wipe down the walls, racks and drawers inside the refrigerator. The vinegar assists in removing foul smells, but does not linger for more than an hour or two and is completely safe.
- 3). Sweep and mop under the refrigerator. If you can, move the refrigerator so you have more room to work with. If you cannot move the refrigerator, sweep underneath with a broom and attempt to wipe the floor underneath with the water and vinegar mixture.
- 4). Absorb the smell. Place a container of baking soda in the door of your refrigerator. This usually absorbs all smells. According to the Mrs. Clean USA website, placing a small amount of cat litter in a pan or placing activated charcoal in the refrigerator removes smells as well, but the refrigerator must remain empty if you choose to use either of these methods. According to the United States Department of Agriculture website, pouring vanilla onto a cotton swab and leaving it in an empty refrigerator for 24 hours also helps.
