Replacing the ignition cylinder
The ignition cylinder makes use of a key which is used to unlock the ignition. This allows the current to flow and this is what starts the motor. However, with time and usage these ignition cylinder locks can fail. The tumblers that are contained inside the ignition cylinder can block the locking mechanism and may even stop to work completely. So, what do you do when you have to replace the ignition cylinder? The good news is, even though the situation seems a bit tense, there is an easy fix to it. Even if you are an automotive novice, it will be easy to perform the job all by yourself.

Things you will need
To get this job in place, you will need to be ready with a 1/8-inch pin, an ignition key and a new key cylinder.
The procedure
The first thing that you will need to do is turn the key in the ignition cylinder to the number II position. Now, you will have to push the pin under the ignition cylinder, into the pin slot. Next up, you will be required to apply some upward push or pressure on the pin. This will be to push the ignition cylinder retainer lock. Up next, you will have to pull the cylinder from the steering column. This you can do with the help of the key. Then, all it remains for you to do is insert the new ignition cylinder. For this, you will have to turn the key to position II. Then, the cylinder will need a little push from you to put it all the way into its position and that you will know has been done, once the cylinder clicks. Now that your new ignition cylinder is all set in, simply turn your ignition key to position I. So, you are all good to go! This was just general information on removing any vehicles ignition cylinder. But it is always advisable that you consult the manual of a particular vehicle because, certain things can be different in different automobiles and so you will need to adapt to it accordingly.
When its a Ford Focus
If you have to change the ignition cylinder on your Ford Focus, then you will have to bring in a key into the scene that will work with that particular type of cylinder. But fortunately, replacing the ignition cylinder on Ford models is a tad easier than doing it on other car models because these cars do not include any extra wire that connects the system and the cylinder. In this case, after you have detached the lower dashboard panel, the audio control and the steering column locking lever, all it will remain for you to do is insert the key into the switch in the ignition cylinder. Now, you will have to turn the key to left to position I and then press the detent with screw driver to release the cylinder and the key. Now, insert the key into the new cylinder and place it in the steering column with all the locks in place. Then, turn the key to the off position and remove it. In the end, replace the shrouds, the audio switch and the dashboard panel and reconnect with the negative ground battery cable.
