How to Make a Tent for a Party

    • 1). Decide on a budget. Your party needs may range from expensive, upwards of $200, or frugal, under $50. How much you are wiling to invest in your tent will determine how much of the tent will be premade and how the tent will look. Cheaper fabrics include nylon, mesh and poly tarps, and will provide a sensible space for an informal backyard party. These fabrics are also best for repelling various types of weather, such as rain, snow and sun. For a more formal party experience, decide on a budget by selecting a fabric such as cloth or silk, which will add a sense of luxury to the environment.

    • 2). Decide on a mood. A casual backyard engagement would benefit from a low-key mesh or poly tarp. These fabrics often come in muted, earth-tone colors that will not distract from an informal engagement. As an added benefit, these hardy fabrics can be strung directly from trees and from the house structure to create a simple tarp that will add an informal tone to any party. More formal occasions, such as weddings and engagement parties, require more formal fabrics, such as cloth and silk. These fabrics will add to the ambiance of careful lighting and floral arrangements and often have more flexibility when it comes to selecting a color.

    • 3). Engineer a strategy. For an informal party tent, purchase the appropriate fabric that is the size of the space you would like to cover with a tent. Create holes in the four corners of the fabric and suspend the tarp by lifting the ends of the rope and tying each end to an opposing structure, such as the house and a tree or deck, using simple knots or screw hooks.

More formal fabrics are more susceptible to tears and damage and so require more careful deliberations on how to set up the tent. Lay two pieces of rope or long plastic or metal poles parallel from each other with approximately 5 feet between them, then lay the tent fabric over the rope or poles. Suspend the tarp by lifting the ends of the rope or poles and tying each end to an opposing structure, such as the house and a tree or deck, using simple knots or screw hooks.
