Gardening in the Spring

103 9
Spring is the busiest time for gardening, regardless of where one lives.
There are a wide variety of chores that have to be performed before a person can start the fun part of planting new flowers and watching them bloom.
For people who live in colder climes, the bulbs that come up first like crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips, should be considering coming up soon.
Now that the snow has finally started melting and mostly stopped falling, the bulbs may consider coming up and gracing us all with their presence.
In other areas, irises and other early bloomers like pansies may have already started blooming.
One of the biggest things to do in the spring before planting flowers for this year is to remove all of the debris that has collected in with the dirt and mulch.
This debris minimizes the amount of space that the flowers have to expand and can make digging holes for the new plants very difficult.
Once the debris that has collected over fall and winter has been removed, it is time to take stock of the soil.
Every garden needs a good layer of top soil to provide the plants with the crucial nutrients they need to grow and flower.
If a garden does not already have soil ideal for growing things beyond weeds or grass, there are a variety of sources for acquiring dirt for one's garden.
In areas with a lot of gardeners, one can probably find a place that sells dirt.
This place might also sell mulch by the yard so it could be a source of one-stop shopping.
Once the condition of the soil has been made ideal for the plants one wants to put in, it is time to start figuring out what plants to put into the garden.
This should be done while taking into consideration acidity of the soil, the amount of sun a specific spot receives, and how to water the area.
If a person's gardens are all hooked up to a sprinkler system, watering becomes much less of an issue.
If a hose or sprinklers are needed, the logistics of lugging a hose out to the back of the yard could be a bit more than anyone wants to take on.
Another thing to consider when choosing plants is how much work the plants need on their own.
Some plants, like roses, require a lot of attention and upkeep.
If this is not appealing, it is better to go with less attention requiring plants.
After determining what plants are going where and how much space each one needs, it is time to go to the nursery and pick up some plants.
Once they are in the ground and watered, dirt should be added, if necessary, and the plants need to be mulched.
The mulch keeps the roots cool in the summer and prevents the top soil from being washed away.
