105 29
Holidaymakers heading to the Dutch capital can look forward to a city break that offers an appealing mix of both indoor and outdoor attractions. Step off your flights to Amsterdam, and alongside the galleries, museums, concert halls and shopping malls, you'll discover there is plenty to do out in the fresh air as well. Here are a few ways you can get back to nature during your visit:

Windmills
First things first. For the majority of tourists, the Netherlands conjures up images of colourful windmills adorning the landscape. So why not go to see a few when you visit? Head to Zaanse Schans for some of the finest examples. This town, just 20-30 minutes away from Amsterdam city centre by train, is home to no less than eight windmills situated on the pretty Zaan riverbank and several are in fact fully working mills.

Woodland Walk
For those who want to immerse themselve in nature, Amsterdamse Bos - or Amsterdam Woods - is located on the southern fringes of the city. This 1000-hectare mixture of grassy fields and thick forest is crisscrossed by walking trails. Meander along the green expanse's 137 km of footpaths, or explore the organic goat and cheese farm.

Sunset Experience
For a heavenly sunset experience, head to the Star Ferry cafe at Muziekgebouw aan t'IJ - Amsterdam's ultra-modern concert hall. Sitting outside on the vast terrace overlooking the harbour you will have the perfect seats for a spectacular show. The Muziekgebouw's massive glass wall reflects the sky's vivid colours like a mirror, so it's as if you are watching two sunsets at once.

Al Fresco Dining
Westergasfabriek's popular restaurant, Rainarai, is an excellent choice for those seeking al fresco dining. Relax on the comfy cushions set up on the ground outdoors and sample Algerian food from your perch under the stars.

Outdoor Markets
Taking a trip to Jordaan's Noordermarkt square is a summer must for shopaholics. Sift through the bric-a-brac at Tuesday's antique and flea market or hit the Saturday food market for plenty of cheese and organic vegetables. Whichever day you choose to go, you will find yourself under the shelter of a canopy of trees in one of Amsterdam's liveliest neighbourhoods.

Whether exploring the local forests or dining under the stars, there's plenty of opportunity to enjoy life outdoors when you visit the Dutch capital. With affordable last minute flights to Amsterdam currently available online, there's still time to take advantage of the warm weather and indulge in wholesome outdoor activities Dutch-style this summer.
