They had a stake in what happens and if you let everyone vote for free stuff, they will keep voting for free stuff until the roof has to make snow on it and caves in, especially if they have everything to gain and assume no responsibility whatsoever.
Today, we have podium pushing politicians swearing that they will deliver us anything that we desire and making us all sorts of promises if we vote for them.
Well, I guess if everyone believes all that and elects them, and expects something for nothing, they will continue to be elected.
