Personal Injury - Definition and Types

For those who haven't known yet, personal injury is a legal term for damages, suffering or pain inflicted psychologically, physically, mentally or even socially.
This could be an illness or some form of physical or psychological damage but whatever the nature of the suffering is, as long as it is done to a human being, it's generally called Personal Injury.
These damages are commonly brought about by the negligence of the defendant or also from social/mental damage caused by publicly spreading wrong rumors about a person (libel).
Defamation torts may also arise to personal injury cases.
This article will tackle about the different types of personal injury - its nature and brief definition of each.
Auto/Car Accidents.
Considered as the most common negligent act that results to multiple personal damages, car accidents were recorded to have reached a drastic sum of 3.
3 million cases in the US for the year 2010 alone.
In most accidents, there are several factors usually involved - drunken drivers, teenage drivers, phoning while driving and wrong or unclear road signs.
Medical Malpractice.
These are forms of negligent acts usually done in the hospitals and are a direct result of wrong medical procedures or treatment plan.
Sometimes, misinformation or lack of information can also result to several damages to the patient, therefore the PI cases arise.
Common examples of medical malpractice happens to medications - overdose, underdose, wrong route of administration, not giving the drugs on time or giving the drug to the wrong patient.
Falls and Slips.
This can be a simple slip on a newly mopped floor that has no proper signage, unchanged torn carpets or tripping over a pavement.
In many cases, there's really no need for a lawsuit as long as the damage isn't very huge or if the injured have been well-compensated by the owner of the property to where he/she fell or slipped.
Workplace.
As an employer in the US, you should know that you are governed by the Worker's Compensation Law.
This means that if your physical injuries were acquired due to the working environment or the nature of your job, you will be compensated either partially or fully, depending on the company.
This could damages caused by stressed at work or activities that you've done while working.
Compensation can be in a form of monetary allowance while you're still recovering or by medical coverage.
The most popular cases are those called industrial illnesses which are common to workers of industries that manufactures silicon, asbestos etc.
