Trekking the Lost City in Colombia! Unmissable For the Adventure Traveler

103 23
La Ciudad Perdida (aka The Lost City) is one of the most reputed jungle treks in all of South America, and for good reason.
The idea of spending six days fighting your way through lush green jungle and crossing roaring rivers is enough to spark the adventurous side in anyone.
While 'fighting' may be a slight exaggeration (The paths are well trodden with groups of 4-12 people plus guides beginning every few days), the experience is not one to be quickly forgotten.
The trail winds away from the end of a 2 hour, and somewhat nerve-wrecking ride in the back of an old land cruiser, 3 full days into the depths of the jungle.
The trails may be well trodden but they are steep, muddy and criss-crossed with tree trunks and roots.
The river crossings are no exaggeration either, by the time you get home you will be an expert with well over a dozen crossings under your belt, and when its raining (which is fairly common) they are not for the light hearted.
Not to worry though, your experienced local guides have seen it all before and are more than helpful, risking their own limbs at times to ensure the safety of yours.
And the wildlife! Incredible! The variation is limited only to your powers of observation; snakes, pigs, fish, frogs, giant toads, leaf-cutter ants, butterflies that will blow your mind and more species of birds than you can imagine ("Officially: Colombia has the most bird species on Earth").
When you finally reach the top, no small feat with the 1000+ steps ending your third day, you are gifted with a breathtaking 360 degree view of jungle covered valleys rising up in the distance to form jungle covered peaks.
If you're lucky, low lying mist will bathe the valleys and give you that hard to find feeling of sitting above the clouds.
Beautiful birds of blue, yellow, red and green will swoop from tree to tree and you will truly fall in love.
