Peru Holidays - Get Off the Beaten Track

103 23
Could 2010 be boom time for Peru holidays? According to recent research we're all becoming much more adventurous when it comes to planning our holidays.
Gone are the age old package tours replaced instead by inspiring journeys to far flung corners of the world.
But that doesn't mean we have to go without our creature comforts.
For those wanting adventure with class, Peru is an attractive option.
Luxury Peru holidays may seem like a contradiction in terms.
Should you be climbing the slopes of a mountain by day and relaxing in a five star hotel at night? For some that defeats the purpose, but they are becoming more popular and Peru is bracing itself for an influx of business.
In the capital Lima, new hotels are springing up to cater to this new brand of high end client.
In September the New Museo Arco opens up in September.
Orient Express, the luxury hotel chain recently acquired a new hotel in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
They are all designed to help you enjoy the star attraction of any Peru holiday: Machu Pichu.
This is one of the seven wonders of the world and is a truly awesome spectacle.
It was officially discovered by the American historian Hiram Bingham, while trekking the country in search of other ruins.
However, it had in fact been found by locals around ten years earlier, when fire removed undergrowth covering the ruins.
Today it is one of the most popular ancient sites in the world, and despite the credit crunch, more people than ever before are setting out in search of this little piece of the Inca world.
As the travel companies rush to offer an ever greater range of tours, 2010 looks set to become a real boom year for Peru holidays.
As well as Machu Pichu there is also the historical ancient Inca capital of Cusco nearby and the modern capital Lima; not to mention some of the most stunning scenery in the world.
However, that all comes at a price.
So popular has Machu Pichu become that many people have started to fear for its future.
Wanderlust recently listed it as one of the world's most threatened attractions, alongside Stonehenge in Britain.
That might put off some visitors, but you shouldn't let it deter you from visiting what is one of the most magnificent places in the world.
It is a once in a lifetime experience - one that you'll never forget.
The challenge for the Peruvian authorities, travel companies and indeed the tourists themselves is to find a way that people can enjoy this wonder of the ancient world, without consigning it to history altogether.
