How to Unclog Toilets With Snakes
- 1). Check that the snake cable is all the way back into the tube before you begin. Ensure that the wire bit at the end is hanging from the end of the tube. Check the size of the wire bit against the size of the toilet trap-way to ensure it will fit properly.
- 2). Position the wire bit so that it rests inside the toilet trap-way entrance. Turn the toilet snake handle in a slow, controlled fashion. The shank of the snake should extend into the trap-way. Continue turning, and keep your grip firm if you feel resistance in order to allow the shank to push through the bends in the toilet piping.
- 3). Turn the handle two or three more times after you feel a strong resistance. At this point, the wire tip should have penetrated the clog. Keep turning to allow the tip to free the clog or move it into the main drain.
- 4). Pull the cable back into the tube by turning the handle in the opposite direction. Check the end of the wire tip for the blockage. Remove the blockage and wipe off the tip with a dry paper towel. If the blockage is not hooked to the tip, it should have been carried through to the main drain.
- 5). Flush the toilet two or three times to ensure the blockage is freed. If the toilet does not flush, repeat Steps 1 through 4.
