How to Clean an Air Conditioner Outside
- 1). Turn off the breaker switch to your air conditioner unit. Turning the unit off at the thermostat is not enough; you need to be sure that no electricity is running to the air conditioning unit.
- 2). Inspect the exterior of your air conditioner unit for damage or any build-up of organic material.
- 3). Remove the screws from the exterior panel with a wrench, then remove the panel itself.
- 4). Remove any covering surrounding the air conditioner coil. Use a stiff-bristled brush to remove any dirt or debris from the coil. Be careful not to damage the coil, but loosen as much dirt as possible.
- 5). Place plastic lawn and garden bags around the motor, fan and any exposed electrical parts.
- 6). Spray through the coil with a garden hose that has a sprayer attached. Spray from the inner section outward until the water runs clear.
- 7). Remove the plastic lawn and garden bags and replace the coverings around the coil. Also replace the exterior panel.
