How to Replace a Smoke Detector Battery
- 1). Place a sturdy chair or a small stepladder underneath the smoke detector. Climb on the chair or stepladder to access the detector.
- 2). Remove the battery access cover and take out the old battery. Dispose of it in accordance with local laws; some communities consider batteries to be hazardous waste.
- 3). Place the new battery in the same position as the old battery. Typically, a smoke detector uses a 9-volt battery.
- 4). Replace the battery cover and press it gently until it clicks back into place.
- 5). Press the test button on the smoke detector to ensure it works. You should hear a high-pitched beeping sound.
