How to Build a Thermal Image Device

    • 1). Open up your digital camera or webcam with the screwdriver. If there are no screws then gently pry it apart using a flathead screwdriver.

    • 2). Locate the charged couple device, or CCD. This is the part that is responsible for taking the images. It is rectangular in shape and generally sits directly behind the lens. If you can't find it, look at your user's manual to see where it is located.

    • 3). Gently pry off the infrared filter. This is a red-colored piece of glass that is glued onto the CCD. Use the screwdriver to slowly and gently remove it. Use a rocking motion and do not damage the CCD.

    • 4). Cut a totally black exposed negative without a photograph on it to the size of a quarter so that it covers the CCD. With a webcam you may be able to wedge it into the casing to keep it in place. If you are using a digital camera, you will need a bit of craft glue or a nontoxic glue stick to attach it to the CCD. Let it dry for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 5). Reassemble the camera and take photos in the dark. The photos will be in black and white and the colors will be a bit washed out, but you should be able to see clearly.
