How to Navigate Directories with Dos

104 10
    • 1). Type "cd foldername" to change to a subdirectory of the directory you are currently located in, replacing "foldername" with the name of the directory you want to change to. For example, if you are currently in a directory named "Pets" on the C: drive, you would switch to the "Cats" subdirectory by typing "cd Cats."

    • 2). Type "cd fullpath" to change to a directory located anywhere on the drive you are currently on, replacing "fullpath" with the full path to the directory you want to change to in the format "drive:\directory." For example, typing "cd C:\Animals\Crocodiles" would get you to the "Crocodiles" directory no matter where you currently were on the drive. This can be very useful if you know the exact location of the directory you are trying to reach.

    • 3). Type "cd .." to move to the parent directory of the one you were currently in. For example, if you were in the directory "Dogs," a subdirectory of "Pets," typing this command would move you to the "Pets" directory.

    • 4). Type "cd /d fullpath" to move to a directory located on a different drive than the one you are currently on, replacing "fullpath" with the full path to the directory you want to change to in the format "drive:\directory." For example, typing "cd d/ F:\Houses\Mansions" would move you to the "Mansions" directory on the F: drive no matter where you currently were.

    • 5). Type "cd /d driveletter:" to move to the default directory of a different driver, replacing "driveletter" with the letter of the drive you want to switch to. For example, typing "cd /d F:" would move you to the F: drive. The same process can also be accomplished by simply typing the drive letter, followed by a colon: for example, typing "F:" will also move you to the F: drive.
