The ghost story relates to a woman who stayed in the hotel In May of 1928. The woman, 22-year-old Leone Jensen, was dressed in an evening gown after a planned night of dancing. She committed suicide and ghost sightings have since been reported of the woman and children's voices from the school.
- On May 7, 1928, Jensen, killed herself by jumping off the hotel's seventh story roof. The suicide was a result of Jensen being spurn by a lost love, a bellboy at a hotel nearby, according to ghosthaunting.com. There have also been conflicting reports about whether the woman killed herself or was pushed from the building roof. A well was used in the hotel's/school's basement. Three children allegedly died by falling into the well, according to ghosthaunting.com.
- Since her death in 1928, ghost hunters and hotel guests have reported a variety of strange activity at the San Carlos. This includes reports of noises, a white shape of a woman's figure and breezes throughout the house. The sounds of children can also be heard, possibly from the children who allegedly fell into the well.
- The Missouri Ghost Hunters Society conducted testing on the seventh-floor roof where Jensen committed suicide. Researchers found cold spots and chills throughout. EMF (electromagnetic fields) detectors readings were high, potentially related to the presence of ghosts. The ghost hunters also captured orbs (circular objects) in their photographs.
