Five Reasons Why You Might Be Struggling As a Leader

103 10
You wanted to be a leader and put a lot of energy and effort into achieving that goal.
Now that you are in the role, you might be feeling like it is a bit of a struggle.
So what are some of the reasons why you might be struggling and what should you do about it? Reason 1: You are still in management mode Your job title has the word 'leader' in it but are you operating like a leader? Leadership is essentially about influencing, impact and human interaction, whilst management is ultimately about running things.
One reason you might be struggling as a leader is that you are still operating as a manager.
Solution: Make some time to reflect on whether you are still operating in management mode and, if so, start making small changes to start leading more.
Reason 2: You are still mostly doing Up until you became a leader, part of what made you stand out from the crowd was your ability to churn through lots of stuff and get things done.
Trouble is that, as a leader, you are judged on your ability to lead and inspire others to do things.
Solution: Keep track of your time for a week and analyse how much time you are spending in doing, as opposed to leading, mode then commit to make one small change for the next four weeks.
Reason 3: You won't let go Sure there are things that we all love to do but are you holding on to things out of habit? Truth is we all are to some extent holding on to things we should really let go.
Solution: Write out things that need to be done and only you can do, check these align to priorities and then focus on the priority areas only.
Reason 4: You rely on status People do not follow based on your job title or seniority in the organisation.
If you have been relying on your status to get people to follow, then this might be why you are struggling.
Solution: Work on building trust and relationships and stop relying on status.
Reason 5: You are not taking care of you You are a real asset to the organisation if you are firing on all cylinders.
Often the more senior we become, the more likely we are to neglect taking care of ourselves.
We push ourselves harder, work longer and don't take the exercise we know we should.
Solution: Start making time for refreshing and re-energising yourself to start achieving better results as a leader.
The Bottom Line: Succeeding as a leader does not come with a guarantee.
So what habits do you need to change to stop struggling and start achieving more success as a leader?
