Interviewing Techniques for Auditors
- When interviewing for an auditing position, it is necessary to present yourself as an objective person. Auditors and accountants have qualities that allow them to perform mundane and routine tasks that can takes hours, days or even months. Demonstrate your ability to observe detail. Answer all questions in as technical of manner as possible while using an economy of words. Auditing is not creative in nature, it is process driven. This methodical and repetitive job requires a technical and straight forward approach. Take a sample of your business writing to the interview. Audit reports are direct, factual, and no longer than necessary. Writing effective audit reports is a critical responsibility of an audit job.
- When attending the first interview with a human resources employee, make sure to hit all of the key points from the job description and details. The HR department employees use a checklist-style interview. Be sure to provide all of the relevant details that allows the interviewer to check all the boxes. HR employees are people-oriented, therefore you should make good eye contact and be engaging. It is very important to show your human side. It is important that you act like a person that people would want to work with. Again, it is important to use an economy of words with HR. Answer the question that have been asked as clearly and directly as possible without interjecting personal or irrelevant information. Keep the content of the interview to your traits that make you good for the position. If asked a personal question, about your hobbies or likes, be sure not disclose any taboos, strange behavior, religious or political information. Do not disclose any information in the interview that you would not tell the general public.
- When interviewing with the audit manager or director, be sure to use all of the industry buzz words and verbiage. Using the industry lingo makes the interviewer connect professionally with you. This leads them to believe that you are apart of their profession and a colleague not a subject. The right buzz words may also cement the interviewers impression of your knowledge and skills. Mirror the interviewer's behaviors. Try to place yourself on the same cadence and tone as the interviewer. By accepting the same tone and cadence as the manager or director, you will further make yourself compatible with them without the realization that it is a technique. It is important to mention again that you must use an economy of words here. Do not be branded as a disruptive talker.
