When to Plant Vegetables in Indiana
- Carrots, radishes and other root plants can be planted several weeks before the last frost date. They can be reseeded again in late August to take advantage of cooler fall weather.
- Leafy plants such as lettuce, cabbage, spinach and kale enjoy a cool growing season and do best planted a week or so before the last frost date. This protects them from the hot summer sun. Like root plants, a second, fall crop is possible.
- Vegetables that grow on a stem such as peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and okra should be planted after all danger of a frost is past. Planting them earlier than the recommended date is taking a chance on the weather cooperating. The risk is that all the plants will be lost unless there is prior preparation to see them safely through a late frost.
