How to Fix Most Small Engines
- 1). Remove the spark plug. Put the boot back on the spark plug and place the metal end on the body of the engine that you are fixing. Attempt to start the engine and make sure that the plug is giving off spark. If it is not, you will need to change your spark plug or follow the spark plug wire back to the magneto coil. Make sure that the magneto coil is clean. The magneto coil may need to be replaced but this is not common.
- 2). Remove the air filter, clean or replace it. While the filter is off, spray the carburetor with cleaner spray.
- 3). Make sure that your fuel is new, and that the lines are not pinched or clogged with dirt.
- 4). Put your finger over the open spark plug hole, and attempt to start the engine. If you feel your finger getting "sucked" into the hole, that usually means you have good compression.
- 5). If your engine is 4 stroke, you will most likely have oil. Change your oil with a good HD30 oil or whatever is suggested by the engine manufacturer. If it is 2 cycle, be sure that the fuel and oil mix is correct and that the mixture is not over a month or two old.
- 6). Replace all parts you have removed, prime the engine fuel bulb if applicable, and start your engine.
