Understanding Regular Blood Sugar Levels
Assuming you, the patient, are fasting, your doctor will typically add a reading of your blood sugar levels to your lipid profile testing.
This is called a fasting glucose level test and it should identify problems in your blood glucose levels if there are any.
Typically doctors like to see fasting sugar levels under 100 however many people who have this test performed on them are either not fasting or have forgotten about some foods or drinks they have recently consumed which can affect the test.
Some doctors will even perform the test anyway even with full knowledge that your blood glucose levels may not be normal due to foods you may have eaten.
If this is the case it may be beneficial know what regular blood sugar levels may be when you are not fasting.
Unfortunately this type of information is not an exact science as your blood sugar levels will be different based on what you ate and how long ago it was consumed.
For this reason a regular glucose range is given for non-fasting subjects.
A regular range of sugar levels for healthy people who are not fasting is typically considered to be in the 100-140 range however many people can argue this range depending on their perspective.
Unfortunately there really isn't a good way to know for sure if you are healthy if you have you blood glucose levels checked after you have eaten but it's probably safe to assume that if your levels are in the low 100s you are probably in the safe zone.
Remember, blood glucose levels can be too low just as they can be too high.
So a regular glucose reading for someone who is not fasting probably shouldn't be below 100.
Still, there are many variables and many sides to the argument.
To normalize results and remove most variable from the reading of normal blood sugar levels fasting measurements hold the most weight.
And if you haven't had your levels checked recently maybe it's time to see your doctor.
