How to Sand Hardwood Birch Plywood for Shelves
- 1). Wrap a piece of 120-grit sandpaper around a sanding block. Sand the surface of the birch using long strokes in the direction of the grain. Sand the board until you cannot feel any surface inconsistencies.
- 2). Wipe the excess dust off of the board with a tack cloth.
- 3). Wrap a piece of 220-grit sandpaper around your sanding block. Sand the board again to remove any minor scratches that the first sanding may have left. Sand in the direction of the grain and stop when the finish is smooth.
- 4). Clean the dust from the surface with a tack cloth. Your board is ready for staining or painting.
