Five natural Sinusitis Remedies
Sinusitis is an infection of your sinuses. It can be acute, a one time occurrence or it can be chronic, always hanging on, never seeming to go away. It can be brought on by many different conditions. The most common conditions leading to sinusitis are colds and allergies.
Whether colds, allergies or something else, what happens is your sinuses get blocked and fill with fluids that bacteria breeds in. What needs to happen is to kill the infection and remove the blockage. Here are five natural sinusitis remedies that can help.
1. Supplements
Vitamin C and vitamin A are good for treating the infection. Vitamin A thins mucus allowing your sinuses to drain more easily. Vitamin C enhances your immune system. It is often recommended to take up to 10,000 IU of vitamin A and 1000 to 2000 mg of vitamin C. If you find any discomfort or stomach upset while taking this dosage cut it back.
2. Aromatherapy
Pour 5 to 10 drops of eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, pine, thyme, or tree oil, or use a combination of some or all of these in a pot of hot steaming water. Make sure the water is no longer over the heat. Lean over and inhale. Inhale three breaths. That is one set. Do this for three or four sets and repeat this whole procedure four times a day. You can put a towel over your head and the pot to allow more steam to be inhaled. Be careful not to burn yourself. Keep your head far enough from the steam so the steam is not hot enough to injure you.
The heat and steam will help to loosen the mucus and open your airways. The oils will ease congestion, stimulate circulation and fight the infection.
3. Another Steam Formula
Another formula is as follows: Blend 3-5 drops of wintergreen, peppermint, tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils into 70 ml of glycerin, 25 ml of water and 5 ml of alcohol. Place this mixture into mildly steaming water and breathe in deeply.
4. External Rub
You can use the above glycerin, water and alcohol mixture as prescribed above and use it as an external rub. Take the mixture and instead of placing it in steaming water, rub it over the sinuses. DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY!
5. Herbs
Take a dose of 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of echinacea every three to four hours. This will help to stimulate your immune system. You can also take the echinacea in capsule form. Take 500 to 1000 mg every three to four hours. If you are using standardized extract 3.5% echinacoside then take 150 to 300 mg every four hours.
These are remedies that have been found to be effective through the years. They are borrowed from a number of different healing disciplines. As with any health treatment they should be used carefully in concert with advice from a health professional.
