Teaching assistant jobs are one of the most common jobs in many schools.
A teacher's assistant can do many things, and there are many different types of assistants.
Depending on your preferred line of work, you may want to focus your career on a particular type of teaching assistant job, or keep yourself open for a job with more general and varied duties.
A typical teacher's assistant will assist a teacher directly in the classroom.
They will perform clerical duties, such as inputting student's grades, setting up seating charts, making copies of papers, collecting homework, setting up equipment around the room, and other duties in order to help the teacher run their classroom more efficiently.
Their goal is to perform the small menial tasks so that a teacher may focus more on teaching and helping their students safely and properly learn, participate, and enjoy their class.
Assistants may also provide individual attention to students in a classroom, especially in younger classrooms where the subjects are often simpler and easier for an assistant to help with.
Some assistants are in training to become teachers, and may also help the teacher instruct and teach their class.
A person hoping for a job in this field should be prepared to order supplies for classrooms, assist in helping students understand material, and be outgoing and responsible.
In general, this job can be considered a sort of secretary for a teacher, with many added responsibilities.
Many assistant jobs involve, in addition to clerical and classroom work, supervising students outside of the classroom.
In a younger age group, the teacher will walk the children to gyms, libraries, or guide them outside for recesses and breaks.
A teacher's aide may also be called upon to supervise during other school activities and events.
These activities and events include lunch, recess, school fairs, and safety drills.
In many ways, a teacher job can be multiple jobs in one-not only will a they perform clerical duties for a teacher, but they will also be responsible for the well-being of their students and school.
Some assistant jobs are more specific, such as hall monitors and cafeteria monitors.
Although some teacher jobs may require assistants to perform these duties in addition to work inside the classroom, some schools prefer to have assistants whose job is solely to monitor areas of the school, and certain events within the school.
This allows for the teacher to focus their attention on one job, providing a more efferent and safe monitoring system.
Job outlook for this line of work is unsure.
Some areas are looking to fill teacher assistant jobs, but many school districts are cutting back how many employees that they hire.
This may change the face of the teaching job, as they may require employees to perform even more duties inside and outside of the classroom, to make up for the cutting of certain positions within the school system.
