If you are visiting Australia or any other overseas destination, you may be tempted to just use your own home cell phone or SIM.
This is a silly idea.
Using your mobile phone from home could end up costing you thousands of dollars in roaming charges.
Not only will you pay exorbitant outgoing rates, but you will also spend a heap of money just to receive calls.
I would not recommend you using your home cell phone.
Get yourself a Prepaid SIM Card.

  If you are using your home mobile, then you will not know about any exorbitant roaming charges until you returned home.
  Buying your SIM card from here, you will know how much you are spending as you continuously buy credit.
   
• You will not receive any unexpected phone bills- As I mentioned, if you use your home SIM card then you may receive an unexpectedly huge phone bill when you get home.
  Avoid these unexpected bills and get yourself a prepaid mobile.
   
• You can maintain your privacy- If you want to get a postpaid account in the country you are visiting, you have to provide a large amount of information to one of the mobile carriers.
  You do not have to give this information to a carrier if you get a prepaid cell phone when you get here.
  

A prepaid SIM card is a smart purchase for those who are travelling to Australia.
Do yourself a favour and get yourself one as soon as possible.
