Part-Time Jobs for 16 Year Olds
- Sixteen-year-olds are quite capable of working part-time in a restaurant. Possible tasks include busing tables and resetting them for the next customer, becoming a host or hostess to show customers to their seats or waiting on tables to collect food orders. Sixteen-year-olds can even work behind the scenes washing dishes or prepping food for the cooks, though some states may restrict access to cutting tools and machinery.
- Teens don't have to get hired by a company in order to get a part-time job. If they have a special skill, they can offer services as a tutor and get hired directly by parents. For example, a 16-year-old who has completed 10 years of dance lessons may offer to help struggling dance students after class for a fee. Teens who excel academically can offer to tutor those who require extra help to grasp the material taught in school. Teens who have junior lifeguard credentials can even give swimming lessons.
- Clerks and cashiers are needed in a wide variety of establishments. Supermarkets need cashiers and baggers to scan grocery items, while clothing stores need clerks to ring up merchandise for customers. In addition, 16-year-olds can become cashiers at a movie theater. They can collect money for the movie tickets or fill orders for popcorn, soda and candy.
- Sixteen-year-olds are old enough to complete certain service jobs. For example, a 16-year-old can pass a babysitter course and offer babysitting services to parents in the community. Dog sitting or walking is also an option. Teens who enjoy outdoor work may want to begin a landscaping service. Leaves can be raked in the fall, snow can be shoveled in the winter, grass can be cut in the summer and seeds can be planted in the spring.
