How to Learn Pidgin-Signed English Online

104 27
    • 1). Learn the structure of PSE, which bridges the gap between native ASL and native English speakers. Read an online tutorial that explains the differences, such as the facts that words such as 'the' or 'am' are rarely used, the endings of words, such as --ing, are not always used and the past tense does not have to be signed or finger-spelled.

    • 2). Learn the alphabet. Find an online worksheet that has pictures of the alphabet being spelled out in signs. Practice the finger movements and then repeat them without looking at the worksheet until they become easy for you. Create games to practice such as spelling out the names of you and your friends.

    • 3). Learn basic signs from downloadable worksheets of the PSL signs. Practice these with friends and in front of a mirror until you can do them without thinking. Check your finger position carefully as small differences give words different meanings. Make sure you are not using an ASL sheet, since the signs differ from those used in PSL and you will become confused.

    • 4). Add your own style, since PSE users communicate in whatever way they feel comfortable with. Add your own signs that feel logical and natural; other PSL users are likely to understand.

    • 5). Practice. Join a sign language club and participate in online video calls with members. If you have video call facilities you can even have a group discussion online.
