What Is Attic Mold and What Should You Do About It?

103 11
Attics are hugely problematic when it comes to mold problems especially if they aren't properly insulated during the winter months.
The hot dry air of heating units comes into contact with the cold boards of the roof and moisture forms.
This moisture is a huge breeding ground for attic mold to not only survive but thrive.
Sadly, heaters aren't the only way to make your attic attractive to mold.
Bathroom fans draw the moist air from showers directly into the attic adding more warm moisture to the problem.
The nails in shingles also provide an ideal ventilation tool that keeps mold coming back again and again.
With this in mind, it's important not to tackle your mold problem until you've done your best to minimize exposure and risk for your home.
Remove the source of the moisture that's causing your attic mold or no attic mold removal effort will be truly effective.
The next step is to identify the specific type of mold you're dealing with.
A visual inspection can help with that to at least determine the color and texture of the mold.
Most attic mold will be either white, black, brown, or green in color.
It may be found on insulation, wood, or drywall as well as anything that is stored in the attic too.
It also may present as a powdery coating, small splotches, or spots and/or discolorations.
Once you've identified the mold you're dealing with it's time to get rid of it.
Before you go out and get the first attic mold removal spray you come across you need to start by getting rid of attic mold infested materials that cannot be saved.
Chief among these materials are drywall, wallpaper, and delicate fabrics and papers.
Get rid of as many of these things as possible by disposing of them in a sealed plastic bag.
Then invest in a good spray for attic mold.
Bleach is not a good option for this important job because it can't penetrate the surface to really kill the mold that lurks beneath it.
If you can't really get into the attic to properly investigate your mold problem you might need to hire a mold remediation expert to do the work for you.
You want to make sure that the company you choose has a ventilation expert that can work with your attic and be careful that you don't mistake a roofing contractor with a remediation expert.
If you think it's too much money to hire an expert like this, consider just how important your family and the health of the people you love really is.
If you or someone you love is experiencing any illnesses that are unexplainable and show no signs of going away it could indicate that black mold is a problem in your home.
How about memory loss? Headaches? Cramps? These are all symptoms of black mold that are overlooked or dismissed as something else each and every day by families and the medical community alike.
All in all, this is a case where it's much better to be safe than sorry especially if you already suspect a mold problem in your home.
The good news is that most mold is harmless (if unattractive).
But, when it comes to the health and well-being of your loved ones, can you really afford to take that risk?
