Crazy accidents

Crazy accidents happen all the time whether you live in Utah or throughout the world.  Many of these freak accidents are fatal, but sometimes people walk away.  Here are a few lucky people who somehow survived some crazy accidents.

Terrorist attack at 33,000 feet

In 1972 a Yugoslav Airline DC-9 departed from Copenhagen on its way to Belgrade with 28 passengers and crew.  At 33,000 feet in the air, a bomb planted by a Croatian terrorist group exploded.  The plane disintegrated and crashed into the mountains.  However, stewardess Vesna Vulovic survived the 33,000 foot descent sitting on the tail of the plane.  She ended up with a fractured skull, two broken legs, and three broken vertebrae.  She was paralyzed from the waist down, but after several months and several operations she was able to walk again.  She holds the Guinness world record for surviving the longest fall without a parachute.

Under water for an hour in Utah

According the New York Times, in 1986 when she was two years old, Michelle Funk fell into a creek swollen by runoff from the winter snowpack near her home in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She had been submerged for over an hour before rescue teams were able to find and retrieve her.  Doctors in Salt Lake City, Utah were able to revive her using a heart-lung bypass machine to rewarm her body.  She survived the longest recorded submersion with an intact neurological outcome.  She lives a happy normal life still in Utah.

Luckiest man in the world

Frane Selak had his first near death experience in 1962 when his train to Dubrovnik suddenly derailed and plunged into an icy river.  He survived with a broken arm.  In 1963 he was flying to Rijeka when the door blew off the plane and he was sucked off the plane only to land on a haystack.  He woke up in a hospital some days later with only minor injuries.  In 1966 an accident sent his bus plunging into a river.  He escaped unharmed.  In 1970 his car caught fire and he escaped just before the fuel tank exploded.  In 1973, another of his cars caught fire.  He survived but lost most of his hair.  In 1995, He was hit by a bus in the city of Zagreb and survived with minor injuries.  In 1996 driving on a mountain road, Selak swerved his car off the road to avoid an oncoming truck.  He landed in a tree to watch his car explode 300 feet below.
