Chimney Cleaning Has A Lot Of Misconceptions

103 11
Chimney cleaning and chimney repair are a topic that holds a range of different ideas and notions on the contractors providing this work.
Some people believe that all chimney sweeps are crooks.
The fact of the matter is this just is not true.
A chimney sweep is a man or a woman who has undergone some very hard tests.
Before they are eligible to take such tests, they must have a lot of field experience.
When it comes to this field one must understand that since no State requirements for licensed chimney sweeps, there are going to be a lot of fly by night companies providing this service.
If there are fly by night companies abundant in any industry of course going there will be a lot of work performed not up to par! As a home owner, you must be aware of these things.
This is not to say that you should not hire a chimney professional to clean and keep up your chimney.
It is imperative that you have an annual scheduled chimney cleaning and inspection of both your furnace flue chimney and your fireplace chimney.
There may be 2 separate chimneys with single flues or they may very well be one chimney with 2 or 3 separate flues with in it.
Regardless of the set up if you allow this part of your home to fall in neglect you are inviting fire and carbon monoxide poisoning to come into your home.
This is a real problem and we are not trying to scare you but to make you aware of what is going on! Your furnace flue vents the fumes that accumulate after what ever fuel burned to heat your home.
Oil furnaces burn oil and oil soot is extremely dirty.
This soot actually eats away at the chimney liner inside your chimney.
If you can see decay from the outside as a result of neglect from your furnace flue it is too late and you will need a chimney liner installed.
These are extremely expensive expect to pay around $2000 to have a stainless steel liner installed if you fall with in this category.
If you have a gas furnace, the fuel burns a little cleaner.
But this flue still must be cleaned on an annual basis when this flue is neglected, you run the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
In addition the soot that accumulates from gas is acidic which means this is going to eat away at your chimney flue.
An annual cleaning and inspection is all it takes to keep these problems at bay.
