If you grow your own herbs, you will find yourself saving a lot of money while adding new flavors to all your meals.
You will also add aroma and beauty to the surroundings and achieve a very strong sense of peace and achievement.
The best thing is that herbs grow wonderfully even in pots.
It is a recommended method of growing herbs for people living in apartments.
You should consider the variety of herbs that you wish to grow and the space which you are willing to give up for it.
This space can be anywhere like the balcony, front porch, patio, lawn, etc.
The only things which you will need are some seeds or plants, sunshine, some water, some pots and a little soil.
Now, here are some tips that will help you with the process.
1.
Pick a container- You can have a fancy or a simple herb pot.
You can get a large selection from which you can make your choice at nursery's or garden stores.
You can also consider using coffee containers.
You will also need to research the water draining capabilities of the pot that you select.
This is because most herbs need regular drainage.
You should thus ensure that the pot you select has at least one half inch drainage hole.
If it does not have one then you can make one yourself with a masonry bit.
This is the most important part of the pot.
It is only your imagination that limits you when choosing a container.
There are ceramic and clay pots, as well as coffee cans and elaborate pots.
The possibilities are endless.
2.
Get Dirty- It is quite obvious that you will need some dirt.
You can find bags that contain enriched potting soil at various garden shops or big box supply stores.
Herbs prefer soil that can drain well and retain moisture at the same time.
This depends on the place you live in as well as the location of your plants.
In the summer you should live in a place that gives 80+ inches of rain every year so that moisture does not cause you problems.
You should just use your judgment.
Just remember that you should be careful of where your pots are located when it is raining in case the soil collects too much moisture.
3.
Always buy plants or seeds from someone you trust as a reputable supplier.
The better the seed quality, the better the growth.
You get seeds at a large number of stores.
You can look in nursery's around your house for the seeds.
These places have professionals that can help you out as well as advise you on the type of herbs that flourish in the place you stay in.
You should always check dates on seed packs you buy to ensure that it is fresh as well as to make sure that the plants are healthy and they do not have any dead leaves.
4.
Water your herbs- Everything on earth needs water in order to survive.
Herbs aren't an exception.
You should just remember to keep the soil moist at all times and not to over water them.
If you do this then they will die.
Ensure that there are holes to release the extra water too.
5.
Sunshine- You should position your pot in such a way that your herbs get sunlight for 4 to 5 hours daily.
You can place them on windowsills, the patio, the porch and even the fire escape as long as they are facing the south.
