    • 1). Use the lifting device, whether it be a simple A-frame or a Bucyrus Eire crane, to lower the engine into the engine compartment of the vessel as closely as possible to the engine bed, where the engine will be mounted. Have your assistants tune and position the engine so that it can be lowered onto the bed in the correct position.

    • 2). Give precise directions to the lifting device operator as the engine is lowered onto the engine bed. After the engine has settled onto the bed, keep the lifting device line under a strain, so that your assistants can push the engine exactly into place with minimal effort. Give further instructions to the lifting device operator if necessary.

    • 3). Connect the two forward-most mounting bolts between the engine mounts to the engine and tighten to the correct torque, specified in the engine manual.

    • 4). Have the lifting device operator slack the lifting slings, but do not disconnect them. Attach and tighten all mounting bolts, one bolt on the left, then the corresponding bolt on the right, from the front of the engine to the rear. Disconnect the lifting slings from the engine. Bolt the engine to the transmission.

    • 5). Attach all hoses and electrical wiring to the engine. Service the engine with lubricants and pre-fuel the engine, if the engine is a diesel, as required.
