Camping in cold weather is not for those who are afraid of the cold! It can also be challenging but with the proper sleeping gear and clothing, camping in cold weather can be a fun experience.
Pack the Correct Clothing Clothing is particularly important when camping in cold weather - without the proper clothing the camping experience can be extremely poor or even life-threatening.
The most essential items of clothing to pack before going to your campsite includes long underwear that is also thermal, thermal or wool socks, ski jackets, warm coats, insulated gloves, wool hats, thick turtleneck sweaters and sweat pants.
Jeans are not recommended.
Layering is also a good idea when camping in cold weather, so plenty of extra clothing should be brought along such as long and short sleeved shirts, fleece jackets, long pants, wool scarves and extra socks.
Clothing should not be too tight when layering because loose fitting clothing will trap warm air and keep the body warmer.
It is important to make sure that all clothing worn is dry - wet or damp clothing should never be worn when camping in cold weather.
Shoes and Boots All shoes that are worn should be insulated and waterproof and it is a good idea to avoid wearing tennis shoes or trainers because they will not provide much protection from the elements.
Hiking boots, or rubber boots worn over shoes are a good option.
Trousers should always be tucked down inside the boots and for extra protection duct tape can be taped around the trousers and the top of boots to keep out the cold and snow.
A good tip to remember is if there is snow at the campsite, then before entering the tent, shoes and boots should be swept clean of all snow to keep the tent dry.
Type of Tent and Bedding to Use The best type of tent to use at campsites in the winter is one that is designed for all weather and that can be used in all seasons.
In addition the tent should be waterproof.
The inside of the tent should be kept warm with warmers.
When camping in cold weather at campsites bedding is important.
If sleeping on the ground there should be at least two layers between the sleeping bag and the ground and an insulated padding should be used underneath the sleeping bag.
To provide more warmth the sleeping bag should be fleeced-lined and a wool blanket can be used inside the sleeping bag.
It is also important to keep the head warm when camping in the cold, so a hat should be worn when sleeping.
Also wool socks and thermal underwear should be worn when going to bed.
Camping at campsites in cold weather is not for everyone but for those who are up to the challenge and who have the proper clothing and gear, camping in the cold can be an enjoyable experience.
