Buying New Furniture Vs Reupholstering
An update is in order.
It happens to all of us every twenty years or so.
You paint the walls, maybe even have the flooring replaced with the latest ideas.
It's the furniture that ought to be simple to replace.
There are stores all over the place, as well as on line businesses, that want to help you out.
Purchasing new upholstered furniture can be a lot of fun, but if you are hoping to keep your project at a lower cost, you may be surprised what you'll get.
When you find a chair that you like, take a good look at it.
Remove the cushions, feel the springs.
Originally the cushions will be quite dense and hard, but they will soften up and become more comfortable.
Move your hands along the sides of the chair, under the arms and to the legs.
Depending upon what you are willing to pay, may depend on what you find.
A less expensive piece is going to be fabric stretched and tacked under the chair.
Paying more, you may find that the sides are padded.
Why would this make a difference to the consumer? If you are easy on your furniture, it may not, but if you have children and pets it may not last long.
A few toys pushed against it and a little frolic with the dog, and the fabric may become less taught.
In a couple of years, you may be buying new furniture again.
Now take a look at the chair leg, it is wood or plastic? Do you care? Now do the same test with your existing chair.
If you find that your old furniture is well padded and better constructed you may want to rethink your decisions.
We all need an update from time to time, but don't assume that recovering a good, well built sofa, isn't worth it.
Fabrics can be bought at stores where discounts are a regular practice.
In the end you may be paying more to recover, but you may have a nicer piece of furniture.
If you like the style of your existing furniture, but not the fabric, have a couple of upholsterers come over and look at each piece and tell you how many yards of fabric you will need and the cost of the labor to reupholster.
Keep in mind that if your furniture has a skirt on the bottom, it can be redone without a skirt, or the reverse is also an option.
Before you buy new furniture consider recovering.
The new fabrics will add the updated look that you were hoping for, and keep the quality you want.
