Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Open your refrigerator, and locate the temperature adjustment dial. This often is located at the rear of the unit.
2

Turn the temperature adjustment dial to the ideal temperature. Many temperature problems are the result of the dial being set at too high a temperature. If you think the thermostat isn't working at all, then proceed to the next step.
3

Unplug the refrigerator, and remove the thermostat cover to expose the internal wiring of the thermostat.
4

Turn on your multimeter, and set the control dial to read "ohms."
5

Touch each of the two multimeter leads to a wire terminal inside the thermostat. Hold the leads in place. The multimeter should read "0" or "infinity." Any other reading means that the thermostat wires are damaged, and you need a professional electrician to repair the problem. If the problem isn't with the thermostat, proceed to the next step.
6

Locate the metal condenser coils underneath the refrigerator. These coils draw heat from the fridge, which allows the unit to stay cool. Sometimes the coils become dirty, which prevents them from operating effectively.
7

Clean the coils thoroughly with a duster or broom. This allow the coils to maintain a constant temperature in the refrigerator. If the problem still isn't resolved after these steps, then the condenser motor assembly may be damaged beyond repair. In this case, you need to have a professional replace this condenser or replace the refrigerator entirely.
