Can I Change Dependents for Unemployment in Ohio?

104 15

    Why It Matters

    • In Ohio, the number of dependents you claim can determine how much you get for your weekly benefit amount. For 2011, the maximum weekly benefit amount for zero dependents is $387. For up to two dependents it is $470 and for three or more dependents it is $524. Since it has a direct effect on your benefit payment, it is important to give an accurate number of dependents to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. In fact, you can make changes as your dependent situation changes.

    Claiming a Child

    • You can claim a biological child, stepchild or adopted child if certain qualifications are met. The child must be under age 18 or disabled and unable to work if over 18. You must have provided at least 51 percent support to the child for the 90 days preceding your unemployment application. If you have a spouse that claimed the child on an unemployment application within the past year, you will not be allowed to claim the child.

    Claiming A Spouse

    • A spouse can also be claimed as a dependent in Ohio if certain qualifications are met. You must provide more than half of financial support to the spouse. The spouse must have income that is 25 percent lower than your average weekly wage in the base period. Also you must be legally married and living in the same home.

    How to Change Dependents

    • To make changes to your dependents, you must call the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services unemployment office. At the time of publication, the phone number to call is 877-644-6562. You can reach a representative between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Monday through Friday. Offices are closed on holidays. When you call to make your change, you will be asked eligibility questions. The change takes effect on your next benefit payment.
