Four Natural Home Remedies for a Sore Throat

103 32
A sore throat is characterized by irritation, a scratchy voice, or pain that usually worsens whenever you swallow.
It is usually the initial indication of pharyngitis or the inflammation of the throat; however, the terms "pharyngitis" and "sore throat" are normally interchangeable.
A viral infection is considered as the most common cause of throat pain.
It usually disappears on its own without the need for medication or can be cured using a home remedy for a sore throat.
A less common type of sore throat called strep throat or streptococcal infection necessitates additional treatment with the use of antibiotic medications to prevent any complications.
Likewise, other kinds of throat pain due to less common causes may require a more complex treatment.
The symptoms of aching throats differ based on its cause.
The signs and symptoms usually include the following:
  • A muffled or hoarse voice
  • White pus or patches on your tonsils
  • Red, swollen tonsils
  • Sore, swollen glands in your jaw or neck
  • Dry throat
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Pain that worsens while talking or swallowing
  • A scratchy sensation or pain in the throat
Less common types of infections leading to a painful throat have other symptoms and signs as well.
These may include the following:
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Body aches and pains
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Chills
  • Fever
Whatever the cause may be, your immediate concern when your throat starts aching is how to get immediate - albeit temporary, in some cases - relief.
You may be immediately tempted to run to your physician; however, some of the best forms of treatment are home remedies.
The next time your voice is hoarse or scratchy, or you feel just plain sick, try out the following:
  1. Licorice root
This herb has long been utilized as a home remedy for a sore throat and recent studies indicate that it is effective when used in combination with water to make a solution (similar to mouthwash) for gargling.
  1. Slippery elm
Slippery elm has been traditionally used as a cure for sore throat.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, primitive Americans used slippery elm to relieve painful throats and cough.
  1. Honey
Honey can be taken straight up or mixed with tea to relieve an aching throat.
Scientific researchers have verified that this natural remedy works at relieving cough and soreness of the throat.
  1. Salt and water
According to the University of Connecticut - Student Health Services, gargling with lukewarm water with salt can help break down secretions and soothe throat pain.
This natural remedy is also known to help combat bacteria thriving in the throat.
