How Does Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy Work

103 20
There are two types of smoking addictions: Emotional/mental and Physical.
In the former type, you smoke when you are anxious or stressed.
Smoking calms you down and relaxes you mentally.
It becomes a need whenever you are emotionally disturbed or nervous.
Smoking is a preconditioned response.
For instance, if you smoke a cigarette while watching a movie, you automatically feel like lighting up whenever you are watching a movie.
Or, perhaps you get an urge to smoke when you see someone else smoking.
In the latter type, you may get addicted to nicotine, though it has been observed that the addiction to nicotine can be easily overcome, as it is the weakest part of the habit.
Hypnosis mainly deals with the emotional and mental addiction.
These two are more difficult to overcome.
Various hypnosis techniques can be used to re-program the subconscious mind.
Essentially, what is done is the stress and anxiety producing mental images (that occur when you need a smoke) are replaced with calm and relaxed mental pictures.
Because the feeling of tension is eliminated, the smoker doesn't feel like smoking anymore nor does he feel the need to replace the urge to smoke with food.
When smoking is a preconditioned response to certain environments and activities, hypnosis can eliminate these conditioned responses.
Not only do you overcome your compulsion to smoke, you may also develop an aversion to smoking.
Hypnosis is only a method to change the thought pattern that occurs before and while smoking.
It must not be mistaken as a cure for smoking.
You can incorporate hypnosis in any other stop smoking program that you may be using.
In fact, best results are achieved when hypnosis is used along with other therapies.
You will need to go for at least 3 to 4 sessions if you want to stop smoking for good.
It has been estimated that stop smoking hypnotherapy has a 66% success rate which is way more than that of nicotine replacement therapy or behavior therapy (25%).
However, critics of hypnotherapy believe that hypnosis and general relaxation techniques do not benefit smokers and whatever effect is seen is temporary.
So, weigh the pros and cons of this therapy before you go for it.
