How High Do I Need to Go?

    • Evaluate the job you are going to be performing. If possible, measure the height from the ground to the work area. Scout out the location that the lift will be traveling. Uneven terrain will require a different boom lift than an asphalt or concrete surface. Location of the jobs is also important. Lifts that will require a lot of movement will be better served by either a gasoline or diesel engine. Battery-powered lifts will run down quickly after traveling great distances regardless of the terrain.

    Practice

    • Familiarize yourself with the operation of the lift before staring the job. Walk around the machine and visually inspect all components. Check the tires for proper inflation pressure. Look under the lift to be sure nothing is caught on the undercarriage. Inspect for any fluid leaks, especially oils. All boom lifts use hydraulic oil pumps and cylinders for the operation. Check these fluid levels daily. All fuel and battery levels should be registering full. You will not want to run out of power at the full extension of the lift. Consult the operational manual and local regulations for the use of harnesses. Many lifts will not even start without a lift belt safety device.

    Operation

    • Exercise caution and be fully aware of your surroundings. Many lifts operate from a metal platform on the end of the boom. The long booms act as levers from the center of the drive unit. A 6-inch bump can result in a 3-foot bounce while you are at the driver controls. Be aware of all other traffic. They may not be aware that you are moving. Plan your assent. Park the boom lift on a flat surface free of any mud or water. These areas can conceal deep potholes in which the lift tires can fall, tipping the occupants. Extend all outriggers, if provided, to the full extension position. Place only approved wooden chalk blocks under the outrigger pads and under wheels if needed. Watch over your head and all around you when rising in the boom lift. Stay well away from all overhead wires and power lines. Watch beneath you and around you when the boom lift is descending. People may not realize what you are doing above them. Follow all safety instructions provided by the boom lift manufacturer.
