Why People Get Addicted
When you look at somebody who is really going to the extremes with his addictions you often wonder why is the person doing that and not willing to quit. I think that the person often wants to quit, but does not know how, or the power of addiction over him is so strong that he always loses in his fight over his compulsive desire. Before we address the question why the person cannot break up his habit we must first consider the reasons why he got addicted in the first place. I will try to answer the question in the article.
I think one of the main reasons for any addiction is our wish to feel good. In our daily routine we experience a lot of stress, bad emotions, failures and they make us feel really bad. We want relaxation and some uplifting emotions, that's why some people take to the bottle, others start using drugs, yet others turn to illicit sex pleasures. These provide one with some temporary relief, but in the long run these compulsive desires can actually destroy our lives. That's why we need to learn how to handle our feelings and find ways to get positive feelings without falling into any kind of addictions.
Another way why people get addicted is the influence of the people around, especially friends. We care what our friends will say about us. We do not want them to mock us and we tend to conform rather than going against the flow and keeping to our beliefs. Fear of what people might say about us is sometimes so strong over us that we are willing to do anything to please them. However, by doing this we very often ruin our lives. A strong personality can always express his opinion and go against the main stream even if it means losing popularity among the peers.
Lack of purpose in life can also be a serious reason for developing hazardous habits. When a person does not have a target in life he very often spends his free time searching for pleasures. Laziness is number one that any addicted person has to fight in order to get out of his addiction (if he is not a workaholic). An idle mind usually leads to activities that are of destructive and addictive nature. Even if we do not have any higher targets in life we should at least develop some habits that would keep our minds occupied and too busy to search for illicit pleasures.
So, in my opinion a search for pleasures, fear of friends' opinion and lack of purpose in life are among top reasons for getting addicted. There is no doubt that any addiction can be getting rid of and strict measures should be taken to get freedom and continue living in it.
