How to Deice Stairs
- 1). Remove slush and snow with a shovel to expose the ice. A light coating of snow can be brushed away with a broom or the brush on your windshield scraper.
- 2). Sprinkle rock salt or ice-melting products over the surface of the ice. These cause the ice to melt so that you can scrape it from the step without worries about damaging your stairs.
- 3). Allow the deicer to set for 10 to 15 minutes to melt the ice. The amount of time required depends on the product used and the thickness of the ice. Most begin working within minutes.
- 4). Scrape away the partially melted ice with the blade of a shovel.
