There is an abundance of fishing all across the United States from deep sea fishing, lake fishing, offshore fishing, but if you are looking to go game fishing and catch yourself a Sailfish or something similar, there are three popular spots in Florida you might want to check out.

The Florida Keys

Key Largo is the northern most island of the Florida Keys, and the biggest at 33 miles long, located in Monroe County. It calls itself the "Diving Capital of the World" because of the beautiful living coral reefs that are located just a few miles off the coast line in the Atlantic Ocean. While scuba diving and snorkeling draw year round visitors to the islands, thousands of sport fishing enthusiasts flock here each year for some of the best sailfish, marlin, grouper, tuna, and tarpon fishing.

Over the years Key Largo has become recognized as having some of the preeminent charter captains and fishing guides in the world, and they want everyone to know about it. In the circles of professional sport fishing, a lot of charter boat captains are held in the highest regard, and are "ones to watch out for" in the annual tournaments. Some people are a little intimidated about going miles and miles offshore to go fishing, with no land in sight. Not so in Key Largo, you can catch some of the best sailfish just a few miles off the coast where you can still see land.

Treasure Coast, Florida

The Treasure Coast area of south east Florida consists of Fort Pierce, Stuart, and Jensen Beach which are known for their world class fishing. Stuart, FL is considered the "Sailfish Capital of the World" and is the only city in Martin County. It has a population of just over 17,000 people. The Treasure Coast is host to half a dozen sport fishing tournaments each year which primarily take place between November and February.

Sailfish Alley sits off the coast of Stuart and is a vast area of 80 miles that stretches from as far north as the Sebastian Inlet to south of Palm Beach. Sailfish are most commonly found in the 120 feet deep blue tropical waters that follow the edge of the continental shelf which runs northward from Jupiter up to St. Lucie, Stuart, and Ft. Pierce.

Panama City, Florida

Gulf Coast fishing is quite a bit different than the Atlantic side of Florida, and the warm waters provide a wide variety of different types of fishing for you to experience. The sub-tropical waters of the gulf attract sailfish, wahoo, blue marlin, sword fish, and yellow-fin tuna, but you need to travel several miles off the coast to find deeper water where these large fish hang out.

Fishing charter services are recommended in this area and they have a wide variety of offerings from 4 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, and even 36 hours! It is important to note that when fishing for sailfish you will need to travel 30+ miles offshore, so quite a bit of time will be spent traveling to and from the area you will fish from. To be realistic, you will need to opt for the 12 or 36 hour trip, which is well worth it since you will find yourself fishing in areas where there is very little fishing pressure on the fish because of the distance from homeport.
