Making a 90 Degree Bend With a Pipe Bender
- Using a pipe bender to bend pipe is a relatively simple process that takes only a couple of minutes. Pipe benders can be used to bend a variety of metal piping and tubing for plumbing and electrical projects. Bending a pipe rather than connecting two pipes with an elbow joint usually saves money and energy. However, using a pipe bender safely takes practice. Pipe benders are heavy and can be dangerous when used by an untrained individual, so it's incredibly important to either know what you're doing or have a trained professional by your side if you're not sure of the process.
- Open up the pipe bender and slide the pipe into the slot between the handle and the curved bending shoe, lining up the spot where the bend should start with the arrow on or near the top of the bending shoe. Slide the former that keeps the pipe in place in between the pipe and the handle, if necessary. Some pipe benders have a built-in former and do not require this step. Move the clamp, located just above the base of the handle, into place to lock down the pipe. Located the 90 degree marking on the side of the shoe. You'll need to keep an eye on this marking while bending the pipe to make sure it reaches the correct angle.
- If the bender has a footrest, lay the bender on the ground so that the pipe is parallel to the ground and the shortest end is farthest away from you and place your foot on it to steady the bender. If the bender does not have a footrest, lay it on its side so that the handle is parallel to the ground. Put pressure on the top handle. Pull the handle toward you until it lines up with the 90 degree marking on the side of the bender. Release the pressure, return the arm back to the original position at the top of the bender and un-clamp the pipe. Slide the bent pipe out of the side of the bender.
