How to Start a Church Bible Study

104 27

    Develop a Plan

    • 1). Determine your target group. Will you start a Bible study for couples, singles or senior citizens? Based on who will be coming to your Bible study, you can research what topics would be relevant to your group.

    • 2). Find a place to meet. You can ask for permission to hold it at your church, or you can use your home or the home of a friend. Other possible locations include parks, bookstores and other free, public places.

    • 3). Create a simple handout that includes important details, such as meeting time and place and a short list of topics you hope to cover. You may also state your purpose as a group. Add the host's contact information and whether child care will be available, especially if many in your group are couples and have small children.

    Find Interested People

    • 1). Share your plan with friends, church members and others who may be interested in joining a Bible study. Give them copies of your handout to pass along to friends and family members.

    • 2). Ask your pastor if he can announce the launch of your Bible study at the church service and encourage members to attend. Ask if your Bible study schedule can be placed in the church bulletin to make it official and also for more people to be aware of it.

    • 3). Post your handout in places such as apartment complexes or public bulletin boards. Interested individuals who see the handout can contact you because it contains your contact information.

    Hold Your First Meeting

    • 1). Gather teaching tools and supplies. You will need spare Bibles for those who do not bring them. Have enough notebooks and pens available should someone need them for notes. If you meet in a private place, you might consider using a television and DVDs to present teaching material. A computer will also work.

    • 2). Research familiar worship songs and print them out. You may want to start your Bible study by encouraging people to sing a few praise and worship songs. Make sure you have enough copies for every one in the group.

    • 3). Introduce yourself, then ask the members to introduce themselves to others. Name tags will be helpful, especially if you have a large group.

    • 4). Begin the study. Make sure you have prepared a few days before the meeting. You may continue to be the leader indefinitely, or you may alternate with another person who have leadership skill and spiritual maturity.

    • 5). Encourage participation from the group members by asking questions or asking every one to read specific verses from the Bible. Don't force those who are not comfortable reading the Bible or saying a prayer. Thank everyone for attending when the study ends, and look forward to your next meeting.
