How to Paint Cabinets With Latex Paint
- 1). Remove all cabinet doors and drawers from the cabinet by unscrewing the hinges.
- 2). Remove all hinges and knobs from the doors and drawer fronts. Store them in a plastic bag so they do not get lost.
- 3). Lay a tarp over the floor and countertop to catch paint drips.
- 4). Apply painter's tape along the walls and countertops bordering the cabinets. This will protect walls from the paint.
- 5). Wash the cabinet surfaces with a surface cleaner to remove any residual dirt and grime.
- 6). Fill in any dents or divots with wood putty, smoothed in place with a putty knife. Allow the putty to dry.
- 7). Sand all surfaces that you will be painting with 100-grit sandpaper, using either a sanding block or an electric sander. Sand with the wood grain as much as possible.
- 8). Wipe the surface with a tack cloth to remove sanding dust.
- 9). Brush a coat of primer onto the cabinet surfaces, applying it first against the wood grain and then with the grain. Allow the primer to dry.
- 10
Sand the primer with 220-grit sandpaper to lightly roughen the surface. Apply a second coat. - 11
Sand the dried primer a second time with 220-grit sandpaper. - 12
Brush on a coat of semi-gloss latex paint in the color of your choice. Apply this coat thinly to minimize drips and brush strokes. Allow the paint to dry. - 13
Brush on a second coat of paint and allow it to dry for 24 to 48 hours, depending on the humidity in your area, to ensure it will not rub off. - 14
Reattach the hinges and handles to the newly painted doors and drawers. Mount them back in their original positions on the cabinets.
