How to Repair a Parquet Wood Floor

    • 1). Walk across the entire parquet floor, and feel for any spots that feel spongy or uneven. You can also knock on the individual parquet wood floor tiles and listen for any that have a hollow sound.

    • 2). Go to each damaged section of the parquet floor and carefully pry up the tile. Insert a plastic straight edge in between the tiles to disconnect the tongue and groove tiles from one another and pull the tile loose.

    • 3). Inspect the area of the parquet floor where the tile came up. Look for any damage that could be causing the floor tiles to be loose. Clean the tongue and groove assembly, and then reinsert the tile to see if it locks into place properly.

    • 4). Remove any parquet wood tiles that cannot be placed back into their tongue and groove settings. Select replacement tiles that are the same color and texture.

    • 5). Remove the original adhesive from the underfloor to prepare it for the new adhesive and new parquet tiles. Parquet floors typically used bitumen, a type of tar that is no longer approved for indoor use. Clean the remaining bitumen from the places where you removed the damaged tiles using a cleaner designed for use on wood floors. Continue cleaning the underfloor until all the bitumen is removed, as any remaining tar could severely lengthen the drying time for the new adhesive.

    • 6). Check the level of the underfloor where the parquet tiles have been removed. Use a liquid acrylic leveling compound to make the floor as level as possible before installing new parquet wood tiles.

    • 7). Spread the adhesive for the parquet tiles on the underfloor using a notched trowel. Cut the new tiles to size with a jigsaw if necessary, and then press them into place where the old tiles were.

    • 8). Vacuum the floor to remove any dust, dirt and excess adhesive. Sand the entire floor with a belt sander followed by an edge sander. Sand the floor until it is smooth and uniform, and then apply a new finish designed for use on parquet floors.
