Medication for Eczema

104 15

    Eczema Medication

    • Many eczema medications come in the form of a cream, often containing steroids. Many creams are approved for use in children over the age of two. However, there are steroid-free creams available. Pimecrolimus cream, known by the tradename Elidel, is one such cream.

    Protection Outdoors

    • You'll need to avoid sun exposure when using most eczema creams because they increase photosensitivity, and you won't be able to use sunscreen on treated areas. Wear long sleeves and cover up if you need to be outdoors when using prescription creams.

    Side Effects

    • Prescription creams are not without side effects. Steroid creams can cause broken capillaries and permanently thinned skin. Other eczema creams, such as those containing tacrolimus, have been linked to skin cancer, although it's not clear why.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Eczema is believed to be triggered by environmental pollutants. While medication can alleviate symptoms, it's helpful to identify what household products or personal care items you use might be contributing to your or your child's eczema. Try allergen-free laundry detergents and mild soaps and bodycare products.

    Warning

    • As with any topical treatment, always apply as little as necessary to treat the affected areas. Stop using your prescription cream if you experience redness or irritation, and notify your doctor as soon as possible.
