Larry Bird - Still a Player

Larry Bird was born on December 7th 1956 in West Baden, Indiana.
Soon after he was born his parents, Georgia and Claude moved the family to the adjacent town named French Lick.
Larry went to Springs Valley High School where he excelled at basketball and was the all time scoring leader when he graduated.
Larry received a basketball scholarship from Indiana University.
He attended the University for 24 days before deciding that this school was not for him.
He went home and went to work in the Street Department of French Lick.
The Street Department covered all types of maintenance such as lawn mowing, street repair, garbage collection etc..

While working for the department Larry played basketball for Hancock Construction in the AAU league.
In 1976 Larry decided to go back to college and enrolled in Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
Larry played on the basketball team and lead them to their first NCAA championship tournament in his senior year.
Even though they lost the championship game Larry was named USBWA College Player of the Year.
He left college basketball with a 30.
3 points per game average and the fifth highest scorer in NCAA basketball.
In 1979 Larry was drafted by the Boston Celtics for an annual salary of $650,000, the highest paid to a rookie at that time.
Larry played for the Celtics his entire basketball career until he retired in 1992.
His career achievements are astounding with 3 NBA MVP awards, 3 time NBA Champion, he played in 12 All-Star games, the list goes on.
His career stats during his NBA career 21,791 points a 24.
3 average per game, 5,695 assists a 6.
5 average per game and 9,874 rebounds averaging 10 rebounds per game.
After retiring as a ballplayer for the Boston Celtics his involvement in professional basketball and the Celtics did not end.
He was the Celtic's special assistant from 1992 to 1997.
He left the Boston Celtics to take the coaching position for the Indiana Pacers.
In the 1997-1998 season Larry was named Coach of the Year.
Today Larry Byrd is the Pacer's President of Basketball Operations, overseeing the team's draft selections, coaching operations and the team personnel.
