How to Take Tar Out of Carpet
- 1). Use a spoon or butter knife to carefully scrape up as much tar as possible. Take your time and work cautiously so you don't spread the tar.
- 2). Moisten a clean rag with dry-cleaning solvent. Dab the solvent directly on the tar spot.
- 3). Blot the area with a clean, dry rag to soak up the moisture. Alternate dabbing on the solvent and using a dry rag to blot up moisture until no more tar is lifting from the carpeting.
- 4). Combine 1 tbsp. each of vinegar, bleach and lanolin-free dish soap with 2 cups of warm water into a bowl if the tar stain remains. With a clean rag, dab the mixture on the tar spot, then blot up the moisture with a dry rag. Alternate dabbing on the cleaning mixture and soaking it up with the dry rag until all of the tar is gone.
- 5). Rinse the carpeting by blotting the area with a clean rag and cold water. Soak up excess moisture with a dry rag, then let the carpeting air dry the rest of the way.
