    Statewide Salary Average

    • According to data compiled by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2010, estheticians in New York were paid an average of $35,460 a year. The lowest wages reported were in the bottom 10th percentile, less than $20,330 annually. The highest paid estheticians in the report brought in more than $50,200 a year, comprising of the top 10th percentile. However, most skin care specialists in New York fell into the middle 50 percent, making salaries ranging from $25,160 to $44,880 a year.

    Salaries Around the State

    • Some cities provided very different average wages than the state as a whole. For example, estheticians in the Albany metro area made an average of $25,320 a year, much lower than the state average. Rochester and the Buffalo metro area also reported lower than average wages at $28,440 and $28,960 a year respectively. The majority of estheticians in New York worked in the New York City-Northern New Jersey-Long Island area and made $36,130 on average. However, the highest paying area in the state was the NYC-White Planes metro area, boasting an annual mean wage of $36,950.

    Place of Work and Wages

    • In May of 2010, most estheticians in New York worked for personal care services, making $30,410 a year on average. However, many other job opportunities were available. Lower wages were found for professionals working in health and personal care stores, averaging just $27,880 a year. At general merchandise stores, they earned $36,160 on average and at department stores, they earned an average of $36,660 annually. The highest paying positions were in medical facilities. Estheticians in the offices of physicians made an average of $39,540 a year, but those at privately owned hospitals were provided with an annual mean wage of $42,780.

    Qualifications

    • Most estheticians possess a minimum of a high school diploma, but employers commonly seek out those that have done at least some formal training at a beauty or cosmetology school. Some estheticians may start in entry level positions and learn on the job until they are qualified to treat clients directly. In all states, personal appearance workers must be licensed. In addition to formal requirements, estheticians should be very clean, neat in appearance and posses excellent interpersonal skills.
